ART DECO GARDEN

This 1920s original art-deco house had recently had a large extension added, sympathetic to the design of the original house. It was, therefore, important to arrive at a design which would work architecturally with the house and would also satisfy the clients’ needs. So rather than creating separate spaces connected with steps, we opted for steps which would loosely describe areas while still providing easy, gentle steps to take you up to the rest of the garden.

Inbuilt Balau benches to match the deck are close to the house, encouraging people outside. Concealed fittings cast light across the paving surfaces and into the planting, blurring the line between inside & out, night & day.

Art-Deco architecture draws its inspiration from the curves & shapes of ocean-going liners, which were the exciting new holiday vehicles in the 20s. The thinking behind this design was that the steps would represent the sea, where the house represented the ship. A bit fanciful perhaps, but we all need a starting point!
