There are basically three types of deck board to choose from softwood, hardwood or composite, and we have built many decks from all three. Treated softwood is the cheapest option and inevitably it is the one with the shortest lifespan (10 – 15 years without regular treatment); there is an exception in Cedar which is a beautiful softwood, naturally resistant to insects and mould (15 – 20 years without regular treatment).
Hardwood such as Balau or Oak is the best choice where real wood is required, it will last longer (30+ years without regular treatment) and has a more attractive colour & grain than treated pine.
Composite decking is now becoming more popular, with many manufacturers offering different products. All of these products have a long lifespan of 30+ years, but it must be remembered that a treated softwood frame, if well built, should last around 20 – 25 years. Composite frames and posts can be used to match the lifespan of the boards, but these can be expensive.

John is a fantastic landscape gardener and built the Amphitheatre at the Infant’s school (which is still as solid as the day it was built) and built a play area, out of timber, for us too. I also know of many others who are pleased with his work.
John carried out work for us involving the laying of a patio and pathways, necessary preparation work and installation of garden lighting. We had no snagging issues and at the end of the project our garden was left in pristine condition. In terms of other comments I would only say that John is meticulous and I wouild have no hesitation in recommending him.
Quality of work was excellent. John is a real perfectionist and works incredibly hard to make the vision come alive. He doesn’t cut corners and is always willing to look at different ways of doing things – expensive and cheaper options. Work was completed to the budget we agreed. Very friendly but not at all intrusive on our lives. Very reliable – turned up promptly every day. Neat, tidy and no hassle. I absolutely recommend him and his work.
